About this package

About

whatsapp‑web.js is a powerful Node.js library that lets you interact with WhatsApp Web, making it easy to build a dynamic WhatsApp API with nearly all features of the web client. It uses Puppeteer to access WhatsApp Web’s internal functions and runs them in a managed browser instance to reduce the risk of being blocked.

Installation

Node.js v18.0.0 or higher, is required.

npm install whatsapp-web.js
yarn add whatsapp-web.js
pnpm add whatsapp-web.js

Example usage

const { Client } = require('whatsapp-web.js');
const qrcode = require('qrcode-terminal');

const client = new Client();

client.on('qr', (qr) => {
    qrcode.generate(qr, { small: true });
});

client.on('ready', () => {
    console.log('Client is ready!');
});

client.on('message', (msg) => {
    if (msg.body == '!ping') {
        msg.reply('pong');
    }
});

client.initialize();

Take a look at example.js for additional examples and use cases.

Realtime monitor

Use the dedicated monitor script to pair a development session and trace the runtime compatibility surface in realtime:

npm run monitor

What it does:

  • Starts a Client with persistent LocalAuth; the paired session is reused
  • Prints a QR only in the interactive terminal when one is required
  • Captures the current WhatsApp Web HTML in .wwebjs_monitor_cache/ for certification; this never changes the production pin automatically
  • Checks every private window.require() module referenced by the library
  • Writes redacted JSONL telemetry to logs/wwebjs-monitor.log (mode 0600) and rotates it at 10 MiB

Notes:

  • If the saved session is valid, no QR is shown (normal behavior)
  • QR strings, pairing codes, messages, media, cookies, and session material are never written to the monitor log
  • Use WWEBJS_MONITOR_WEB_CACHE_MODE=pinned to test the bundled, strict cache instead of the discovery capture

Bundled WhatsApp Web build

The default client ships a SHA-256- and size-verified WhatsApp Web bootstrap HTML, so a clean install does not need a cache directory, download step, or custom cache configuration. It intentionally fails closed if that pinned file is absent, modified, or reports a different window.Debug.VERSION.

This pin covers the bootstrap document only. WhatsApp Web still retrieves its own dynamic scripts and assets from WhatsApp's official infrastructure; the library is not an offline mirror of those resources.
